১৯৬৫ সালের ১লা জানুয়ারি সোনারপুর বিদ্যাপীঠের পথ চলা শুরু। যদিও এর বীজ রোপিত হয়েছিল ১৯৬৫ সালের ২৯ শে আগষ্ট। প্রথম বছরে ছাত্র সংখ্যা ছিল মাত্র ৮০ জন। এই অঞ্চলে এই নতুন শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠান তার পঠনপাঠনের গুণে দ্রুত পরিচিতি লাভ করে।
প্রথম পর্যায়ে ১.১.১৯৬৭ সালে বিদ্যালয় পঞ্চম ও ষষ্ঠ এই দুই শ্রেণি নিয়ে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ মধ্যশিক্ষা পর্ষদ কর্তৃক জুনিয়র হাইস্কুলের অনুমোদন লাভ করে।
দীর্ঘ লাগাতার প্রচেষ্টায় প্রতিষ্ঠানটিকে উন্নীত করা হয় দশ ক্লাস বিশিষ্ট মাধ্যমিক বিদ্যালয়ে। ১.১.১৯৮৭ তারিখে বিদ্যালয়টি পূর্ণাঙ্গ হাইস্কুলের স্বীকৃতি লাভ করে।
১৯৭৬ সালে রাজ্যে নবপর্যায়ের উচ্চ-মাধ্যমিক শিক্ষাক্রম চালু হলেও, এই বিদ্যালয় কিছুটা দেরিতে হলেও ১.১.১৯৯৯ তারিখে স্বীকৃতি লাভ করে সহ-শিক্ষামূলক উচ্চ মাধ্যমিক বিভাগের।
২০০৫-০৬ শিক্ষাবর্ষে বাণিজ্য শাখা এবং ২০০৬-০৭ শিক্ষাবর্ষে বিজ্ঞান শাখা খোলার অনুমোদন পাওয়া যায়। রসায়ন, পদার্থ বিদ্যা ও জীববিদ্যার নতুন সিলেবাস অনুযায়ী অত্যাধুনিক ল্যাবরেটরিগুলি সম্পূর্ণ সাজানো হয়।
২৬শে মে ২০১০ তারিখে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকারের শিক্ষাদপ্তর বিদ্যালয়কে উচ্চমাধ্যমিকে ইংরাজী মাধ্যম বিজ্ঞান শাখা খোলার অনুমতি দেয়। ১.৭.২০১০ তারিখ থেকে সফলভাবে এর পঠন-পাঠন শুরু হয়।
৬১ বছরের গৌরবময় ঐতিহ্যকে সঙ্গী করে সোনারপুর বিদ্যাপীঠ পা রাখলো এক নতুন ডিজিটাল যুগে। আধুনিক ব্রডব্যান্ড পরিষেবা ও বিশ্বমানের অফিসিয়াল ওয়েবসাইটের মাধ্যমে বিদ্যালয় আজ সম্পূর্ণ প্রযুক্তি-বান্ধব।
